I’ve learned that the best game I had was when I determined and managed the course strategy I needed to take at every throw. I played my strengths, I avoided my limitations, and I pictured each throw in my mind BEFORE I make it.

No shortcuts, course strategy works

After so many years playing at the professional level, I will say that IT DOES and will always help you become a better player, up your stats, and possibly win your game. The most significant tournament mistakes I made always occurred when I fail to plan my throws.

With the course layouts becoming progressively and extremely difficult and long, it is not the strongest throw that works. Courses these days are designed to mentally challenge athletes, forcing them to manage multi-throw and definitely creative strategies.

I like this article from Ultiworld Discgolf about “DiscGolf Course Management”. I thought this was worth noting closely:

Course management means throwing the shots you throw the best and working the disc around the course in a way that maximizes your strengths.

Now there are discgolf athletes that are certainly awesome exemptions. Their two-step approach is simply looking at the location of the basket and throwing their heart out. These exceptional athletes make the basket to the cheers and adulation of the crowd. But for the rest of us, a fully grounded course strategy is the way ahead!

Does working out make you a better discgolfer?

I’ve been asked too many times if working out at the gym makes one a better discgolfer. Does one really need to build muscles to throw farther and better? Discgolf is a very unique sport and my answer to the question will surprise you! Watch.

Creativity in discgolf

I always ask my students to be very creative with their throws. There are very few standard throws to master, but when your disc falls between thick tree lines, non-standard throws, unusual body twists, arm angles and a lot of body english make a creative shot to the clear green or even the goal!
